Normal Blood Pressure Level and Resveratrol

normal blood pressure level

The way to find normal blood pressure level is with a device called a sphigmomanometer.

That's a big word for such a little device.

The sphigmomanometer consists of three parts: the cuff, a device to detect sound, and a pressure sensor that shows the pressure inside the cuff.

The doctor puts a stethoscope, or other listening device just below the cuff to listen for two sounds.

These are called the Korotkoff sounds after the doctor who first identified them.

To hear them the doctor slowly releases the cuff pressure and listens. At first, because the cuff is tight, he hears nothing.

Then he slowly releases the pressure, and the first sound he hears is Thump! Thump!

This thumping is the heart pushing blood past the cuff with each beat, and the pressure at the point is the systolic pressure.

The pressure is allowed to fall until thumps are replaced by a steady whooshing sound. Pressure at the instant the sound appears is the diastolic pressure.

Digital Blood Pressure Machines

Finding your normal blood pressure level is easy like weighing yourself on the bathroom scale. The new sphigmomanometers have digital readout of diastolic, systolic, and even pulse rate. They can even tell you when the batteries are low.

Blood Pressure Numbers

When diastolic pressure is 85 mm. that is slightly high, systolic hardly ever gets high by itself, but when it reaches 150 with diastolic below 90, then it is to high.

The Surgeon General has set standards and they are listed below: Diastolic BP

  • Less than 85
  • Normal
  • 85 to 89
  • High Normal
  • 90 to 104
  • Mild Hypertension
  • 105 to 114
  • Moderate Hypertension
  • 115 or higher
  • Severe Hypertension
Systolic Blood Pressure with Diastolic Less than 90
  • Less than 140
  • Normal
  • 140 to 159
  • Borderline isolated systolic
  • 160 or more
  • Hypertension
  • 160 or more
  • Isolated systolic hypertension

These are the categories established a few years ago on high blood pressure and are taken from the Archives of Internal Medicine.
